TORONTO--()--Sheba Microsystems Inc. (Sheba) a global leader in MEMS technologies, today announced the appointment of Matt Crowley as Senior Strategic Advisor.

Matt brings over 20 years of experience in MEMS technologies, at companies including Sand 9, Vesper, and Qualcomm.

In his new role, Crowley will support Sheba’s efforts in bringing its silicon MEMS micro-actuators to the global market in high-performance cameras for industries including but not limited to: automotive, consumer electronics, transportation, robotics, and security.

“We are thrilled to welcome Matt Crowley to Sheba Microsystems as a Senior Strategic Advisor,” said Dr. Faez Ba-Tis, PhD, co-founder and CEO of Sheba. “With his distinguished career in the MEMS industry, having founded and successfully exited two start-up companies, including one with over 60 million products shipped, Matt brings unparalleled strategic value to our team. His deep expertise and visionary leadership will be invaluable as we navigate this exciting phase of rapid growth.”

Sheba’s first-of-its-kind solution tackles the long-standing large optics camera problem – across all industries – of inability to maintain image quality and focus stability during temperature fluctuations as the optics and camera parts undergo thermal expansion.

As one example, by solving the thermal drift issue in automotive cameras in its new Sharp-7, Sheba technology enables the streaming of consistent high-quality imaging from existing 8 megapixel (MP) sensors. This paves the road towards the adoption of even higher resolution image sensors, which will ultimately keep everyone on the road safer, especially with today’s advancements in autonomous vehicle technology.

Sheba’s proprietary technology compensates for this thermal drift by uniquely moving the lightweight sensor, instead of moving the lenses, thus enabling ultra-fast and precise autofocus when temperatures fluctuate, in all types of cameras. Its breakthrough piston-tube configuration ensures it handles shocks and drop tests as well as life cycle tests in hundreds of millions of cycles performed.

“I am incredibly impressed by the team at Sheba Microsystems,” said Crowley. “It is no easy feat for MEMS companies to successfully develop disruptive products and the recent announcement of the Sharp-7 validates that this is a team that can ship product. Image sensing in applications such as cars, drones, action cameras, robots and many others has been limited by thermal drift resulting in poor image quality. Sheba has achieved a breakthrough in camera image quality that will enable our customers to enhance critical applications such as driver assist and create entirely new use cases for cameras, especially with AI image processing. In addition to providing unprecedented image quality, Sheba’s unique design is extremely rugged and proven to withstand extreme shock and temperature which makes them suitable for the most demanding applications in the harshest environments.”

Sheba Microsystems recently launched its first product for automotive cameras, the Sharp-7, at the AutoSens USA conference in Detroit in May 2024. Previously, it launched its actuator for compact cameras in AR/VR/XR headsets in Las Vegas in January 2024, and an actuator for embedded vision cameras in September 2023. Evaluation kits are available for prospective partners. For more information, visit shebamicrosystems.com.
