Oula’s Virtual Care Platform Keeps Maternity Patients Connected Between Appointments

BROOKLYN, N.Y.--()--Oula, a modern maternity center combining the best of obstetrics and midwifery care, today announced new ways they are engaging pregnant patients between visits. Oula’s care model delivers personalized and evidence-based care for patients at its Brooklyn-based prenatal clinic and through its virtual care platform.

Pregnancy care is typically focused on what happens during clinic appointments, but most of the physical and mental experience happens between those appointments. Oula’s virtual care platform is focused on keeping patients connected to their care team as well as guiding key decision-making through its comprehensive curriculum of timely information. Additionally, of the many touchpoints patients have with their medical team, Oula’s platform enables more than half of all appointments to be done virtually if the patient prefers.

Key features include:

  • “Message a Midwife”: Patients do not need to wait until their next appointment to get answers such as clarifying a blood result or help navigating insurance. Oula’s secure messaging platform is available on mobile or desktop.
  • Care plan builder: There is no shortage of pregnancy content on the internet, but Oula’s care plan builder distills the key decisions that need to be made and when, such as whether to do genetic screening, hire a doula, or plan for breastfeeding.
  • Easy appointment planning: Oula’s scheduler clearly indicates the optimal weeks to book appointments based on a patient’s due date. And unlike most doctor’s offices, appointments can be scheduled and rescheduled online without any phone tag.
  • Regular remote check-ins: Effective maternity care goes far beyond just treating physical symptoms. Oula’s upcoming “check-ins” will prompt patients to reflect on their experience, including their mental health and feelings of respect and autonomy.

We’re rethinking our role as care providers to extend beyond the visits themselves, leveraging technology to make the team accessible, information easy to understand, and to ensure our patients feel supported and respected at all times,” said Joanne Schneider, Chief Experience Officer at Oula. “The traditional patient portal provides bare bones access to health records but falls short of really arming patients with what they need to feel connected to their care.”

This news comes following Oula’s announcement of its first hospital partnership with Mount Sinai West to host Oula patient deliveries, providing a “middle path” midwifery approach combined with the resources of a hospital.

The goal is to equip women with the information they need at the right time, and to offer support for questions they have outside of the typical in-person appointments,” said Adrianne Nickerson, Cofounder and CEO of Oula.
