Chapman is widely recognized as a preeminent leader in cable, DOCSIS, and technology innovation. As CTO of Cable and Broadband at Cisco, he played a pivotal role in shaping the industry. Chapman joined Cisco in its early startup days, where he invented the High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI)—the backbone of the Internet for decades—and designed Cisco’s first ASIC, a serial chip named Mueslix.

He later co-founded Cisco’s Cable Business Unit as an internal startup. His groundbreaking contributions include the invention of Remote PHY (RPHY), now the foundation of modern HFC architecture. As one of the primary architects of DOCSIS, Chapman’s contributions include D3.0 channel bonding (wideband) and D3.1 profile management (PMA), advancing broadband technology worldwide.

A distinguished industry figure, Chapman is a member of the Cable TV Pioneer Society and the SCTE Hall of Fame. He received the National Innovation Award in China for his work on Remote PHY and has been honored with three Cisco Pioneer Awards.

Today, Chapman is the founder and principal of NorthStar Insights, a strategic advisory firm specializing in broadband engineering and product-market fit. A prolific inventor, he holds more than 130 patents and has published 50+ technical papers, cementing his legacy as a visionary in broadband technology.

In addition to the company’s exhibit, Chapman will present at the Cable Next-Gen show on the panel, “Fiddling with Fixed Wireless” and deliver a keynote on “The Need for Speed & the Fallacy of Traffic Engineering.”
