Citizens for Judicial Fairness, Sharpton, and McDole Blast Governor Carney for Secretive Push to Fill Chancery Court Vacancy

The Chancery is America's most important business court but has no justice of color, and only one in its more than 200-year history

CJF calls for transparency and appointment of a Black judge to address judicial diversity crisis

WILMINGTON, Del.--()--Citizens for Judicial Fairness released the following statement today from national civil rights icon Reverend Al Sharpton and noted Delaware police reform and racial justice activist Keandra McDole in response to reports that Delaware’s secretive Judicial Nominating Commission is holding private interviews for the Chancery Court vacancy created by Vice Chancellor Glasscock’s impending retirement:

“Delawareans gave a clear mandate for a ‘New Delaware Way’ by voting for Matt Meyer for Governor this fall, yet old habits die hard in the Delaware Old Boys’ Club led by outgoing Governor Carney.

“It is deeply troubling that Governor Carney and the Judicial Nominating Commission are once again operating behind closed doors, shutting the public – and Governor-Elect Matt Meyer – out of a critical decision that will shape the future of the state’s judiciary. Delawareans deserve a judicial appointment process rooted in transparency and accountability, not one that protects the status quo through secrecy.

“Throughout his tenure, Governor Carney has repeatedly failed to enact meaningful reforms that reflect the diversity and fairness Delawareans expect from their courts. This Chancery Court vacancy presents a critical opportunity for the state to signal its commitment to building a judiciary that serves all its citizens equitably. Instead, this secretive process undermines public trust and raises serious concerns about the motives behind such haste.

“Citizens for Judicial Fairness calls on Governor Carney to halt the current process immediately. The selection of a new Vice Chancellor should not be rushed under a shroud of secrecy but should allow Governor-Elect Meyer the opportunity to lead in appointing a candidate who will inspire confidence in Delaware’s judicial system and promote diversity, transparency, and fairness in the Delaware courts.”

Citizens for Judicial Fairness is a grassroots advocacy organization fighting for transparency, equity, and accountability in state judiciaries across America. Founded in 2016 to fight the unprecedented corruption in Delaware Chancery Court rulings, the group has since grown to more than 5,000 members nationwide.
