Registration for MITRE GameX eSports Tournament Opens with $1,000 in Daily Prizes for Top Winners

Experimental games to help U.S. Air Force better understand mission logistics choices and prioritization while under attack

SUMTER, S.C. & MCLEAN, Va. & SAN ANTONIO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In support of the U.S. Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (AFIMSC), MITRE opened public registration for its eSports tournament, GameX: Mission Generation Under Attack.

As part of an eSports-based human-in-the-loop experiment, GameX participants get a chance to prove their gaming skills and earn prize money, while providing AFIMSC with a better understanding of their challenges and with valuable insights on where to invest their resources.

“Even without adversary intervention, military logistics networks can be brittle and chaotic while also having single points of failure, creating ripe opportunities for attacks,” said Eliahu Niewood, vice president, Air and Space Forces, MITRE. “Plus, as the military plans and carries out the movement, supply, and maintenance of its forces, they easily could already be under attack in the next global conflict. GameX uses both military and civilian participants to test which logistics decisions will best enable the mission.”

Within the GameX: Mission Generation Under Attack tournament, teams of five play the game Drone Guardians and defend deployed locations from multi-domain attacks while continuing to generate fighter aircraft missions. Teams must make critical mission decisions such as whether to prioritize readying aircraft for launch over defending the air base or putting together a contested logistics strategy in order to ensure they have the supplies they need to complete the mission. Providing a challenge on multiple fronts, the game will require a mix of first-person shooter, strategy, and puzzle-solving skills for participants to be successful.

Competitions run 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC, September 22-23; at MITRE’s headquarters in McLean, VA, Oct. 13-14; and at MITRE’s regional office in San Antonio, TX, Oct. 20-21.

Cash prizes of $1,000 will be awarded to the daily winners, and door prizes will be given throughout each day.

Participants (18 years old or older) can register for free as individuals or teams at https://forms.office.com/g/Ur5QqEMcqV. Individual registrants will be placed into teams.
