SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IMDb (www.imdb.com), the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV, and celebrity content, today unveiled the Top 10 Stars and Top 10 Breakout Stars of 2017. Rather than base its annual rankings on small statistical samplings, reviews of professional critics, or box office performance, IMDb uses data from IMDbPro’s STARmeter rankings to determine its definitive top 10 lists, which are based on the actual page views of the more than 250 million monthly unique visitors to IMDb. Additionally, IMDb today announced the list of Top Stars of Indian Cinema of 2017.
“IMDbPro’s STARmeter charts have proven to be a keenly accurate predictor of emerging stars who are about to have a breakthrough career moment, including previous No. 1 Breakout Stars of the year Millie Bobby Brown (2016), Bryce Dallas Howard (2015), and Margot Robbie (2014),” said Matt Kumin, Head of IMDbPro. “IMDbPro tools, including our new iPhone app, empower members with convenient and real-time access to this data, including the ability to filter and customize searches to meet the specific needs of their projects.”
IMDb’s just-launched Best of 2017 section features a variety of additional year-end Top 10 lists, more of which will be unveiled over the coming weeks, as well as retrospective photo galleries, trailers, original videos (including an In Memoriam video), and other year-end coverage. “It is no surprise that Gal Gadot is IMDb’s Top Star of 2017,” said Keith Simanton, IMDb’s Senior Film Editor. “She is the embodiment of a superhero in Wonder Woman and Justice League, and has transformed from an actor of interest (she charted at No. 6 on IMDb’s Top 10 Stars of 2016 list) into her leading role as IMDb’s most viewed actress of the year. Gadot’s year-end chart performance is similar to the STARmeter trajectory of Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence topped the IMDb Breakout Stars list in 2011 after appearing in X-Men: First Class and then skyrocketed to worldwide popularity as Katniss Everdeen in the The Hunger Games franchise, ranking No. 2 on the IMDb Top Stars of 2012 list, No. 1 in 2013, and No. 2 again in 2014. We expect Gadot to remain a top contender in our future year-end lists for some time to come.”
“Bill Skarsgård became a household name in 2017, terrifying audiences as Pennywise the clown in the blockbuster It, as well as appearing in Atomic Blonde,” Simanton said. “Skarsgård is doing double duty this year, ranking No. 1 on our year-end list of Breakout Stars and No. 5 on our Top 10 Stars list, indicating that his take on the iconic Stephen King character enthralled fans all over the world who turned to IMDb to learn more about the actor underneath the creepy clown makeup. The popularity of It also thrust newcomer Sophia Lillis into the No. 7 position on our Breakout Stars of the year list.”
Skarsgård isn’t the only breakout star to simultaneously grace both of IMDb Top 10 Stars lists in 2017. For the first time since IMDb began compiling year-end lists, five of the top 10 Breakout Stars of the year also charted on the overall Top 10 Stars of 2017 list, reflecting unprecedented fan interest in the Breakthrough Stars of 2017, as follows:
- In addition to Skarsgård, Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) charted as No. 2 Breakout Star and No. 6 Top Star this year.
- Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049) ranks as No. 3 Breakout Star and No. 7 Top Star of 2017.
- Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast and “Legion”) is the No. 4 Breakout Star and No. 8 Top Star.
- Katherine Langford (“13 Reasons Why”) is the No. 5 Breakout Star and No. 10 Top Star.
For context, in 2016 only two of IMDb’s Top Breakout Stars also charted on the Top Stars of the year list: Millie Bobby Brown (2016’s No. 1 Breakout Star and No. 3 Top Star) and Haley Bennett (2016’s No. 2 Breakout Star and No. 9 Top Star).
“Shah Rukh Khan captivated IMDb users worldwide throughout 2017, earning the No. 1 spot on our Top Indian Cinema Stars Chart this year, up from his position at No. 3 in 2016,” said Neha Gureja, IMDb’s Head of Audience Development. “In 2017, Khan starred as a ruthless businessman in Raees and a tour guide on a mission in Jab Harry met Sejal. Three of the Top 10 Stars of 2017 Indian Cinema (Tamannaah Bhatia, who ranked No. 5; Prabhas, who ranked No. 6; and Anushka Shetty, who ranked No. 9) all starred together in the international blockbuster Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which was the highest-grossing Indian movie of the year.”
