SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Origin Code Academy, San Diego’s code school dedicated to job placement, today announced that it has changed up its course offering by introducing the first “blended learning” model for programmer training ever available in San Diego. Under this new model, all course material will be delivered online, with only periodical in-classroom instruction conducted to ensure comprehension and understanding.
“This change is really about making our curriculum more accommodating and accessible to students,” said Jeff Winkler, Founder and CEO of Origin Code Academy. “If someone is juggling a full-time job or other commitments, our course material is always available to them online. Or if there’s a student that wants to get started right away, they don’t need to wait for the next class to start. They can begin moving through our curriculum immediately and proceed at their own pace.”
To move its courseware online, Origin Code Academy developed a unique platform called “Start Now” that delivers pre-recorded lectures, conducts tests, manages independent projects, and fosters collaboration with other students. The system also helps instructors identify student shortcomings and make individual assessments.
“Using the Start Now platform, we can see students’ needs more acutely,” Winkler said. “Some struggle with certain areas. We can see how long they've been on a particular problem. We know who is speeding up, and who is slowing down.”
In addition to changing its learning model, Origin Code Academy has also modified the format of its annual “Demo Day,” where San Diego tech employers would traditionally sit in on student project presentations. Instead, the Academy will host a monthly Job Fair where San Diego employers will have the opportunity to present to new graduates and Academy alumni seeking to advance their careers. The first Job Fair is scheduled for Thursday, November 9th from 2:30-6:30 at Origin Code Academy, located at The Vine co-working space in downtown San Diego.
Since opening in August 2015, Origin Code Academy has graduated more than 250 students, with 85% of them receiving a job offer within 90 days of graduating. The average starting salary for an Origin Code Academy graduate is $65,000 per year – with a top reported salary offer of $110,000.
“We feel that the blended learning model is indicative of where the programmer training industry is headed as a whole,” Winkler said. “With a virtual classroom, there’s less stress involved, and students can master the material at their own pace. Everyone wins.”
Origin Code Academy teaches a variety of technology stacks and programming frameworks, including .NET, Javascript, React, HTML and CSS. Students also learn how to work with database technologies and APIs, and how to develop real-time applications. Other highly valued skills such as Source Control and Test Driven Development are also important components of the Academy curriculum.
