PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WhereScape, the pioneer and leading provider of data-driven automation software, announced today that Mark Budzinski, a 30-year industry veteran who currently serves as president of WhereScape USA and global head of sales, has been promoted to the post of CEO. Current CEO Michael Whitehead, who co-founded WhereScape in 2001 and has grown the company into a worldwide organization with more than 700 customers including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, United Rentals and Vodafone, will remain as president and will focus on WhereScape strategic initiatives in the big data, data lake and advanced analytics arenas.
“I am very proud of what our dedicated group of employees has accomplished over the past 15 years in delivering high value solutions to our customers,” Whitehead said. “To get to the next level, we recognized the need to do things differently, but given how well the company has performed, we wanted to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. This is why as a board we unanimously selected Mark as the new CEO. It is critical we keep the good things going, and Budzinski, who has been instrumental in growing the US business to where it represents greater than 50 percent of company revenues, is the right person to do that,” Whitehead said.
“What an honor and privilege it is to assume the role of WhereScape CEO from Michael, who is universally recognized as a thought leader, and just as importantly, a true gentleman in our industry,” Budzinski said. “Michael took WhereScape from an unknown New Zealand-based start-up to a global company that is the recognized world leader in data warehouse automation solutions, and winner of the supreme award at the recent New Zealand International Business Awards. It is an exceptional opportunity for which I am extremely grateful. I look forward to leading our great organization moving forward,” Budzinski said.
“Under the guidance of Michael Whitehead, WhereScape has grown from its consulting root in New Zealand to a worldwide software organization,” said John Myers, Managing Research Director Business Intelligence, Enterprise Management Associates. “From establishing, developing and promoting the domain of data warehouse automation to building a robust software platform, Whitehead’s leadership has extended beyond just the Wherescape customer base to influence new and innovative techniques for analytical environment development and implementation,” Myers said
“Few consultancies can pivot into software companies, but WhereScape under Michael's leadership has made the transition beautifully and now is the leading vendor in the data warehousing automation space,” said Wayne Eckerson, Principal, Eckerson Group.
“Automation has long been the aim of every hard-pressed IT department, but in the world of data warehousing the complexities of managing an important system of record have been daunting,” said Donald Farmer, principal with Treehive Strategy. “Michael Whitehead, with an exceptional mix of innovation, leadership and modesty, has realized with WhereScape an elegant solution to these problems, and succeeded where major database vendors have struggled. I know it has been hard work, but the achievements of Michael and his team have been remarkable and, I am happy to say, well recognized in the industry,” Farmer said.
Michael Whitehead’s vision for WhereScape changed the way that smart companies approach data warehousing,” added Dave Wells, a consultant and teacher who authored the TDWI course on Data Warehouse Automation. “The pragmatic and down-to-earth approach to solving the most vexing problems of warehousing has visible impact on speed, quality, and agility. We can expect to see WhereScape’s innovations for data warehousing applied to data lakes and analytics pipelines too — perhaps changing the world of data management forever.”
