72 Percent of OpenStack Users Cite Cost Savings as their No. 1 Business Driver

8th OpenStack Foundation User Survey also shows increased interest in containers, NFV and bare metal running on OpenStack

AUSTIN, Texas--()--OpenStack’s eighth User Survey demonstrates the maturity and broad adoption of the open source cloud platform used for private clouds, public clouds and telecom networks, pointing to significant increases in percentage of production deployments and satisfaction among users. Conducted semiannually since April 2013, the User Survey is intended to poll a slice of the OpenStack user base to better understand attitudes, organizational profiles, use cases, and technology choices. Data is shared with technical leadership and the community to help make design decisions and plan the future roadmap.

Key findings among OpenStack deployments:

  • Seventy-two percent of OpenStack users cite cost savings as their No. 1 business driver.
  • The Net Promoter Score (NPS) for OpenStack deployments—an indicator of user satisfaction—continues to tick up, eight points higher than a year ago.
  • Containers continues to lead the list of emerging technologies, as it has for three consecutive survey cycles. In the same question, interest in NFV and bare metal is significantly higher than a year ago.
  • Kubernetes shows growth as a container orchestration tool.
  • Seventy-one percent of deployments catalogued are in “production” versus in testing or proof of concept. This is a 20 percent increase year over year.
  • OpenStack is adopted by companies of every size. Nearly one-quarter of users are organizations smaller than 100 people.

Cost, Efficiency and Innovation Cited as Key Business Drivers
The survey polls users to see why their organizations choose OpenStack. The No. 1 ranked business driver is that OpenStack enables organizations to save money over alternative infrastructure choices. Seventy two percent ranked this first. Users also choose OpenStack for its ability to increase operational efficiency (17 percent ranked this No. 1; 63 percent No. 2). A third reason for OpenStack adoption is to accelerate an organization’s ability to innovate and compete by deploying applications faster (86 percent ranked this in the top three).

Users also commonly selected “avoiding vendor lock-in with an open platform and ecosystem with flexible underlying technology choices” and “standardizing on the same open platform and APIs that power a global network of public and private clouds” as top business drivers. Other popular responses included attracting top technical talent and achieving security and/or privacy goals with control of their platform.

Online Analysis Dashboard Launched
The OpenStack Foundation has introduced a survey dashboard, now in beta, and six global filter categories enabling anyone to perform their own analysis. This dashboard—accessible at http://www.openstack.org/analytics—presents 2016 results in aggregate, comparing them to the second half of 2015 survey results.

In this cycle, the survey was streamlined to focus on the data most often cited regarding deployments. The next User Survey cycle will launch in February 2017, with in-depth analysis of more than 50 questions. Results will be ready for the OpenStack Summit in Boston, May 8–12, 2017.
