ISELIN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Members of Amerigroup’s Medicare Advantage (MA) plans in New Jersey will be able to visit doctors using remote access technologies starting in 2017. Members can access a U.S.-based, board-certified network doctor on a secure connection over the Internet via a smart phone, tablet or computer. It will be available at no extra cost for members in Amerigroup’s MA plans in New Jersey.
Amerigroup offers the Amerivantage Duals Coordination Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plan (DSNP) HMO MA plan in the following New Jersey counties: Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset and Union. This plan will be sold during Medicare’s Annual Election period, which begins Oct 15 and continues through Dec. 7 with an effective Jan. 1, 2017.
This plan includes the ability to access doctors using remote access technologies. Doctors are available online 24/7 365 days a year, including holidays. To access this benefit, members need only a computer with Internet access, a web browser and web camera. There also is a free mobile app. Participants are encouraged to use this technology for non-emergency situations only, such as colds, sore throats, flu, allergies, infections, and wellness and nutrition advice. Participants can also see a psychologist or therapist to discuss emotional health topics.
“Remote access technologies can be a great alternative in a number of situations, including accessing health care on evenings and weekends, for people living in rural areas or who travel a lot, and those with mobility issues,” said John Caby, Medicare president of Amerigroup’s east region.
Doctors using this technology can send prescriptions if needed directly to a member’s pharmacy of choice where they may be paid by the member’s MA or Medicare prescription drug plan. A summary of each visit is created and can be forwarded to the patient’s primary care doctor with their permission, supporting continuity of care and collaboration among providers.
Amerigroup’s MA plans utilize a preferred pharmacy network to help members save costs. This preferred cost-sharing pharmacy network is being enhanced for 2017 with the addition of about 100 independent pharmacies belonging to the Access Health organization.
