Orthopaedic Institute for Children Receives Additional Grant from the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation for New Ambulatory Surgery Center

LOS ANGELES--()--The Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) announced today that it has received an additional $20,000 grant from the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation in support of the recent opening of the Ambulatory Surgery Center on the Institute’s downtown L.A. campus. The Dodgers Foundation had previously given $20,000 toward the project bringing its total contribution to $40,000.

“One of the central missions of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation is to support organizations that address the health challenges and needs of children,” said Foundation Executive Director Nichol Whiteman. “We are proud to partner with the Orthopaedic Institute for Children in bringing this much-needed health resource to our community.”

The 13,000-square-foot Ambulatory Surgery Center at OIC is Los Angeles’ first such center designed and built exclusively for children. The center will reduce orthopaedic surgery wait times for children while greatly enhancing quality outcomes and enriching the patient experience for both children and their parents. It is staffed by physicians and other professionals specially trained to address the distinct needs of children and includes two expansive operating rooms and six pre- and post-surgical suites.

This latest grant from the Dodgers Foundation is the most recent chapter in a history of partnerships and cooperation between the two Los Angeles institutions. For example, three times a year OIC hosts a concussion clinic as part of the Dodgers Youth Baseball Camp. At the clinic a physician or specially trained nurse practitioner speaks with camp attendees about concussion prevention and sports-related injuries that take place on the field.

In addition, through the Dodgers Foundation OIC has been introduced to and has worked with other Los Angeles based not-for-profits who share the mission of making Los Angeles a better and healthier place for children. These have included Vision To Learn, providers of free eye exams and eyeglasses to elementary school students in low-income communities throughout the greater Los Angeles area, and City Year Los Angeles, an education-focused, nonprofit organization that partners with public schools and teachers to help keep students in school and on track to succeed.

“There is no more precious resource in the world than children, and our community is a much better place when we all work together with their best interests in mind,” said Cindy Starrett, who serves on the board of trustees of OIC as well as the board of directors of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation. “We thank the Dodgers for their generous support of OIC’s work and for opening up their hearts in encouragement of our ongoing efforts.”
