SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™ today concluded its Technology & Standards Spring Forum by launching new standards projects to define battery backup requirements for VoIP systems, create a list of deprecated cybersecurity methods and update the CTA Technical Report #12, Securing Connected Devices for Consumers in the Home. The week-long event featured presentations, panel discussions and collaboration among more than 130 consumer technology experts in attendance on a wide variety of topics including health and fitness wearables, consumer audio, video, IoT, energy efficiency and drones.

A recent Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruling required residential VoIP providers to offer new subscribers backup power solutions that provide 911 access for 24-hours during a power outage. In response, CTA is developing new standards that will define methods and specifications for providing this backup power. Interested parties can join “R07 WG20 VoIP Battery Backup Working Group.”
Also, CTA’s Consumer Technology Networking Committee has begun developing a list of deprecated methods for consumer technology devices. Deprecated cybersecurity methods are not typically recommended for consumer technology devices, as they may not be sufficiently secure. Interested parties can join R07 WG18 Home Networking Security and Privacy Working Group.
In addition, the committee began updating the CTA Technical Report Securing Connected Devices for Consumers in the Home, which provides guidance on considerations during product development to help ensure that end products are as secure from hackers as possible. CTA’s TV Data Systems Subcommittee authorized a new project on next generation closed captioning that will be used in ATSC 3.0. CTA will develop interoperability tools including test materials for the new ATSC candidate standard, A/343, Captions and Subtitles, which is based on W3C timed text technology known as IMSC1. Panel discussions at the forum focused on the use of consumer health & fitness technology by both consumers and healthcare professionals, the security of IoT devices and on a system developed by NASA for standardized testing of drones. There were also presentations from the Broadband Forum, HDMI Licensing LLC, the HomePlug Alliance, the Wireless Broadband Alliance and the Z-Wave Alliance.
