PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Comcast today announced that it has entered into a content licensing agreement with The Walt Disney Studios to start offering a selection of digital library titles and new releases as they become available from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Disney•Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Disneynature and Touchstone Pictures via the Xfinity On Demand digital store. Effective immediately, customers can buy Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the latest blockbuster hit in the Star Wars franchise just released on Digital HD and SD directly from their TV or via the Xfinity TV website to enjoy the film at home or on the go.
Over the coming weeks, the complete selection of popular new releases and celebrated classic films from The Walt Disney Studios will be available for purchase contingent on license terms and can be stored in the cloud to watch anytime, anywhere, on any device. The collection will include feature films from some of the most beloved Disney franchises such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story and Finding Nemo, as well as new hits like Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Disney•Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen.
“We are excited to expand our digital store offering with the incredible selection of titles from The Walt Disney Studios’ portfolio,” said Nancy Spears, Vice President, Digital Media Distribution and Monetization at Comcast Cable. “Disney films appeal to all generations, and now our customers will be able to easily add them to their digital collection to watch when and where they want.”
As part of the agreement, Comcast will also join Disney Movies Anywhere as a participating retailer with an official launch to be announced at a later date. Disney Movies Anywhere is a cloud-based digital locker that allows consumers to buy their favorite Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars movies anywhere, and watch them across numerous devices and platforms. In addition, Disney Movies Anywhere members get access to special content, rewards, and more.
Through the Xfinity On Demand digital store, Xfinity TV customers have the ability to purchase movies and television shows - often weeks before they are available to rent or purchase on Blu-ray and DVD - and store them, seamlessly, in the cloud.
In 2013, Comcast began selling digital HD content for download and streaming and is routinely one of the top digital retailers of new release movies. The catalog now includes content from The Walt Disney Studios, FOX, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros.
