NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BetterCloud, the leading provider of critical insights, automated management, and intelligent data security for cloud office platforms, today announced the world’s first real-time auditing, compliance, and data loss prevention (DLP) solution available to all Google Apps customers. The functionality is now available in the company’s new flagship product, BetterCloud Enterprise for Google Apps, complementing the existing suite of IT administration and reporting tools BetterCloud provides to more than 50,000 organizations representing 32 million end users.
The company also announced that Mike Cote, vice president and general manager of Dell SecureWorks, joined the BetterCloud board of directors.
Cloud office platforms fuel more collaboration and higher productivity within organizations but also change the security paradigm since data no longer resides on-premise. IT and information security teams need a new set of tools to granularly review and limit content sharing—specifically documents containing sensitive data such as personally identifiable information (PII). For organizations that must comply with industry regulations like PCI, HIPAA, FISMA, FERPA, and SOX, this can lead to significant legal risk which, until now, was extremely difficult to mitigate.
Drive Compliance in BetterCloud Enterprise for Google Apps empowers administrators to continuously audit the contents of their organization’s entire Google Drive in real-time. Using custom regular expressions, they can scan for social security numbers, payment information, or any other type of number or phrase, in an effort to certify compliance with industry regulations.
“At many organizations, millions of documents are created, edited, deleted, and shared daily, with little oversight,” said David Politis, BetterCloud’s CEO. “An enterprise IT or information security team’s responsibility to meet privacy and compliance regulations requires a tool like Drive Compliance. BetterCloud Enterprise for Google Apps is the only product that makes real-time DLP available to all Google Apps customers, and the only solution that combines DLP functionality with the rest of the toolset that enterprises need when deploying Google Apps across their organization.”
How BetterCloud’s Drive Compliance Works
BetterCloud uses new APIs made available by Google to connect securely with data at its source, providing maximum control with minimal setup and no impact on network performance. The technology allows IT administrators to search Google Drive files for PII, such as social security or credit card numbers, using regular expressions. The product then alerts admins to security risks and policy violations through an elegant dashboard, prompting administrators to take one of the following actions:
- Notify users, including the document owner or key personnel such as human resources or the chief information security officer (CISO), of the violation;
- Correct the violation, bringing the content into compliance with established company policies; or
- Automate the task by building content-aware Drive compliance policies that continuously scan and correct documents.
“Since we started using BetterCloud, every couple of weeks or so, we are reminded of the value we get from it,” said Homer Bartlett, system administrator at MailChimp. “Beyond saving us significant time for everything from managing over 300 groups to de-provisioning users, BetterCloud also made it trivially easy to implement a new company organizational structure. The new features for enforcing security and auditing are exactly what we need to realize even more value.”
The appointment of Mike Cote to BetterCloud’s board of directors adds entrepreneurial experience from the security industry. Cote became chairman and CEO of SecureWorks in 2002 and led the company through an acquisition by Dell in 2011. Cote now leads Dell SecureWorks under the Dell brand. Under his leadership, the company has grown to become the leading information security services firm.
BetterCloud Enterprise for Google Apps is available to try for free for 30 days and $2 per user per month following the trial period.
