New High-Concentration Feed Maximizes Bioreactor Space

Product range overcomes solubility constraints to increase working volume

BPI 2014

BOSTON--()--Biopharmaceutical manufacturers can maximize their working volumes in bioreactors without compromising performance or yields, thanks to new cell culture feeding supplements that deliver nutrient concentrations up to three times greater than traditional feeds.

The Gibco EfficientFeed A+, B+ and C+ supplements provide a unique nutrient delivery technology to super-concentrate feeding supplements for optimal cell culture manufacturing. This improvement in bioreactor space utilization enables commercial laboratories the ability to reduce product dilution, maximize working volume and increase product titers up to 120 percent.

Thermo Fisher will display the new Gibco Efficient Feed products this week at the BioProcess International Conference and Exhibition, October 21-23, 2014 at the Hynes Convention Center, Booth #301.

“There was a clear need to develop methods for delivering nutritional requirements in ‘super’ concentrated formats, but the industry was constrained by the solubility of the raw materials,” says Shawn Barrett, Associate Director, Gibco BioProduction R&D, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “It took time to design the technology, but we’re pleased to say we now have complete feeding supplements that don’t require a trade-off between initial working volume and feeding space.”

In addition to the benefits of advanced solubility, Gibco EfficientFeed A+, B+ and C+ Supplements also provide simple single-part Advanced Granulation Technology™ (AGT) dry media format reconstitution (just add water) to reduce risk of manufacturing mistakes during preparation. Once reconstituted, the feeds can be stored at room temperature without having to transport the feed back to the cold room between feeding times for up to 30 days. The ability to keep the feed in the bioreactor suite allows for just one closed-system connection to the bioreactor, further reducing manufacturing risks.
