CHIBA, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pica8, the leader in open systems for software defined networking (SDN), is conducting live 40GbE line-rate VXLAN demonstrations during INTEROP Tokyo June 6-11. Utilizing two white box bare metal switches from Foxconn featuring the new Broadcom Trident-2 chipset, running PicOS 2.3, Pica8 is creating a VXLAN tunnel over a core layer 3 network enabling seamless VM mobility using standard orchestration tools across a Layer 3 boundary. Support for VXLAN within commoditized white box switches will help VMware virtualized environments scale more cost-effectively for top-of-rack (ToR) deployments. By utilizing Broadcom’s Trident2 chip, Pica8 will enable customers to offload VXLAN termination and free up CPU resources for better network infrastructure.
While a 40GbE line rate in a VXLAN tunnel demonstrated effective scaling in an enterprise cloud or service provider environment, VMs are traversing seamlessly across one or more Layer 3 boundaries between the two devices. To show an overlay network expansion at line rate this is the foundation for multi services independent of current legacy geographical location limitations. This is an overlay / underlay multi-layer compatibility infrastructure required to deploy SDN into existing infrastructures.
Pica8 incorporates the Trident 2 chip into two hardware platforms: the P-5401, a 32 x 40 GbE switch, and the P-5101, a 48 x 10 GbE model. Availability for Pica8 switches with VXLAN technology is scheduled for the third quarter of 2014.
