Upcoming Webinar Explores Population Health at the Hospital Level

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--()--Executives from St. Luke’s Hospital, which serves the greater St. Louis area, and Nashville-based Aegis Health Group will explore population health management during a webinar on Thursday, May 29, from 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. (CDT). The webinar, entitled “Population Health at the Hospital Level,” is jointly sponsored by the Healthcare Websummit and Payers & Providers. Participants can register at http://www.healthwebsummit.com/pp052914.htm or by calling 209-577-4888.

Webinar faculty includes three executives from St. Luke’s Hospital: Jan Hess, vice president; Allison Izsak, director of marketing and communications; and Darla Wertenberger, director of community outreach. They will be joined by Yale Miller, executive vice president of Aegis Health Group. Together the four presenters will discuss how St. Luke’s tackled the challenging task of measurably impacting population health while fostering affinity with local consumers.

Population health is one of the most ambitious undertakings in the healthcare sector, and also among the most crucial. Americans are aging and the incidence of devastating chronic diseases, such as diabetes, has been skyrocketing. Given the cost of delivering care in the U.S. is twice that of any other industrialized nation, the need to improve health status and outcomes at the community level is paramount.

Escalating healthcare costs and greater competition coupled with increased consumerism are the driving forces behind St. Luke's Hospital's strategies to attract market share and increase revenues in a competitive market. As a nonprofit healthcare provider, St. Luke’s is committed to the mission of improving the health of the community. By working with employers in the market, St. Luke’s is able to reach a broad population at their worksites. Using an informative case-study format, this 493-bed independent hospital will discuss how it tackled the difficult task of measurably impacting population health while fostering affinity with local consumers. The panelists will describe the approach the hospital has refined over the past eight years and offer insight into how other health systems can implement a similar program in their markets.

“As a healthcare organization we have an opportunity to be on the forefront of improving community health and reining in escalating costs for employers,” said Jan Hess, St. Luke’s Hospital vice president. “Using the tools provided by Aegis Health Group, we are able to identify the most prevalent health risks in a given population and calculate how much those risks could cost if they’re not addressed. St. Luke’s then offers tailored programs to each group and its individual participants. In the end everyone wins.”

Augmenting this presentation is the thought paper from Aegis Health Group: “What Do Employers Want From Hospitals? The Rules of the Road,” which explores the three phases of employer engagement and how to leverage their participation to achieve a true population health management model. These and other papers are available at no charge from aegisgroup.com.
