USTR 2014 Special 301 Report Demonstrates Commitment to Policies Necessary to Spur Innovation and Growth in Life Sciences

Strong IP Policies and Ongoing Focus on Emerging Markets Key to Continued Innovation

WASHINGTON--()--Joseph Damond, Senior Vice President of International Affairs for the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), released the following statement commending the U.S. Trade Representative for its 2014 Special 301 report:

“BIO strongly supports the U.S. Government’s commitment to promote pro-innovation policies throughout the world through constructive and effective engagement with our trading partners. There is ample evidence that innovation is the leading driver of economic growth throughout the world and strong IP policies are a key factor in making innovation available to the public. Hundreds of BIO members are doing groundbreaking work that will not only benefit consumers and patients globally, but also stands to create thousands of new jobs. Moreover, with a pro-innovation IP climate, the prospects for international collaboration in biotechnology are greater than they ever have been. The USTR’s continued enhanced focus on emerging markets such as India, China and Brazil is crucial in ensuring economic growth and we stand ready to support the U.S. Government in its efforts.”
