Spanning Joins Cloud Security Alliance

Cloud-to-Cloud Backup & Restore Leader Eager to Share Data Protection Expertise to Help Companies Operate Fearlessly in the Cloud

AUSTIN, Texas--()--Spanning Cloud Apps, the most trusted provider of data backup and recovery for cloud applications, today announced that it has joined the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), a not-for-profit organization with a mission to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within cloud computing, and to provide education on the uses of cloud computing to help secure all other forms of computing.

Spanning was founded to help companies protect and manage their data so they can be fearless in the cloud. By providing enterprise-class, cloud-to-cloud backup and recovery solutions, Spanning helps organizations of all sizes avoid significant business interruption that can result from lost data in SaaS applications, including Google Apps and Salesforce. The company collaborates with a broad range of customers including major enterprise brands, non-profits and universities.

Since its founding, Spanning has delivered world-class security in its backup and recovery solutions with unmatched success by focusing on:

  • Third-Party Certifications and Audits: Spanning was the first cloud-to-cloud provider to successfully complete the SSAE 16 Type II audit process, a rigorous evaluation of repeatable operational and technical controls. Spanning has earned TRUSTe privacy and security seals and is certified under the US-EU and US-Swiss Safe Harbor Frameworks.
  • Strong Encryption: Spanning Backup protects data at rest with 256-bit AES object-level encryption (one of the strongest block ciphers available) with unique, randomly generated encryption keys for every single object and a rotating master key protecting the unique keys. All data in transit is also protected with Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption.
  • Proactive Intrusion Detection: Spanning’s systems constantly guard against intrusion with log analysis, file integrity checking, policy monitoring, rootkit detection, real-time alerting, and active response.

In joining the CSA, Spanning is eager to share expert insight on backup and recovery best practices and help companies understand the importance of taking a proactive approach to monitoring their data stored in cloud applications. Additionally, it will collaborate with CSA to encourage companies to continue the same diligence when it comes to backup and recovery for their SaaS application data – which includes backup monitoring, status visibility, actionable reporting, cost-effective storage strategies, and the ability to quickly meet compliance demands.

The first activity for Spanning will be to contribute to the Cloud Security Alliance Cloud Controls Matrix (CCM), which is specifically designed to provide fundamental security principles to guide cloud vendors and to assist prospective cloud customers in assessing the overall security risk of a cloud provider. The CSA CCM provides a controls framework that gives detailed understanding of security concepts and principles that are aligned to the Cloud Security Alliance guidance in 13 domains.

Mike Pav, VP of Engineering at Spanning Cloud Apps, said, “The adoption of cloud-based applications is growing at an explosive rate, but unfortunately, many companies are moving to the cloud without a clear understanding of the relevant business continuity and security risks. We respect CSA’s commitment to advocating for cloud security and are excited to work with the impressive list of CSA member companies to help organizations understand what risks and considerations are relevant to their business, and what legacy controls may no longer apply in cloud-based applications.”

“Spanning is an innovator in the cloud data protection market with its unwavering commitment to trust and transparency,” said Jim Reavis, CEO of the CSA. “As a new partner, Spanning joins a like-minded group of security industry leaders who understand the importance of tackling security and compliance in cloud computing.”
