LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai, China today announced it was expanding its voluntary recall of certain types of dehumidifiers sold in the U.S. and Canada to include 21 additional models sold under the GE brand, after receiving consumer complaints that a small number of units had overheated, started smoking or caught fire.
The expanded recall notice, issued in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, includes about 350,000 units sold in the U.S. and 2,700 sold in Canada. In September, Gree announced the recall of 2.2 million dehumidifiers sold under 12 other brand names.
As in the prior recall, Gree advises consumers to stop using recalled products, unplug them and call Stericycle ExpertRECALL toll-free at 866-853-2802 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday and between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. ET Saturday, the company said. Alternatively, consumers can visit www.greedehumidifierrecall.com. Consumers will receive refunds, the company said.
Gree notified the CPSC of consumer complaints about the units previously recalled in early 2013 when the number of complaints had gradually risen to 30. Although the number of complaints was less than 1/100th of 1 percent of the units sold, Gree decided to announce a voluntary recall in cooperation with the CPSC in an abundance of caution.
Gree and its distributors have continued to keep the CPSC informed of incidents as they learn of them.
With respect to the GE units, Gree said it had received 11 reports of overheating with no property damage beyond the unit, and five reports of fires associated with property damage. No injuries have been reported. The consumer complaints amount to less than 5/1000th of 1% of the total units in the expanded recall, but, again, Gree has decided to voluntarily expand the recall to include these units in an abundance of caution.
The Gree dehumidifiers being recalled are 30, 40, 50, and 65-pint GE brand models manufactured by Gree between about January 2008 and December 2010. The brand name, model number pint capacity and manufacture date are printed on the nameplate sticker on the back of the dehumidifier. The dehumidifiers are light gray plastic and measure between 19 and 23 inches tall, 13 and 15 inches wide, and 9 and 11 inches deep.
