BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--School choice advocate Kevin P. Chavous – who helped lead the successful effort to expand and protect educational opportunity for students in the District of Columbia – will join students, parents, teachers and community leaders at a National School Choice Week whistle-stop luncheon rally in Birmingham on Friday, January 24, organizers announced today.
The luncheon event is one of 14 events along the National School Choice Week whistle-stop train and motor coach tour. The event will be held at noon at the Woodrow Hall, and is free to attend. (RSVP at www.schoolchoicetrain.com)
Additional speakers include Reverend David W. Craig from Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church; Cameron Smith from the Alabama Policy Institute; and Bert Gall from the Institute for Justice, as well as students and parents.
Chavous is a former Washington, D.C. city councilman, executive counsel with the American Federation for Children, and board member of the Black Alliance for Educational Options. The goal of the event is to demonstrate support for school choice and educational opportunity in Alabama and across the country. National School Choice Week — which will feature more than 5,500 independently-planned events across the country — will be the nation's largest-ever celebration of educational opportunity. The Week shines a positive spotlight on effective education options for children, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online learning and homeschooling.
“The quality of education is an issue that impacts families, parents, and children – but it also impacts communities,” Chavous said. “I look forward to joining school choice supporters in Birmingham to send a clear and convincing message: that parents in the Yellowhammer State support educational opportunity, and want more of it.”
The event is hosted by National School Choice Week in partnership with Alabama BAEO, Alabama Policy Institute, American Federation for Children, Association of American Educators, Foundation for Excellence in Education, Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, GreatSchools.org, Institute for Justice, and National Alliance for Public Charter Schools.
