What: |
Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies highlights affordability problems in rental housing as increasingly steep costs burden once-secure working and middle class families. Americans who rent their homes are forced to spend an increasing proportion of their income – in some cases more than half– on housing, making it more difficult than ever to make ends meet. The affordability dilemma impacts the health and well-being of American renters, with negative implications for the economy, as lower-income households cut back on other spending just to keep a roof over their heads. In the aftermath of the economic collapse, more families are forced to rent, and because of the slow-growing economy, wage growth is not keeping up with the widespread rental housing market recovery. |
