Application Created with Telerik Icenium Winner in the NASA International Space Apps Challenge

Of Thousands of Worldwide Participants, Cross-Platform Application, ChicksBook, Honored as ‘People’s Choice’

WALTHAM, Mass.--()--Telerik, an end-to-end provider of application development tools and solutions for building cross-platform and mobile applications, announced today that the app ChicksBook, developed on Telerik Icenium, won the “People’s Choice Award” at the NASA International Space Apps Challenge. For 48 hours, developers from the world over came together to compete in more than 50 challenges. As part of this, the Bulgarian-based ChicksBook team created the mobile app focused on raising chickens as a means to maximize earth’s resources.

The NASA International Space Apps Challenge, in its second year, is a global hackathon of more than 9,000 participants from 83 countries. For the 2013 event, there were 600 solutions developed within a 48 hour period, making it the largest international hackathon ever to take place. Given the tight time constraints and the need for submitted apps to run across all major mobile platforms, the ChicksBook team leveraged Telerik Icenium. Icenium allows developers to use existing skills in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to develop, test, and publish applications that run on the Apple iOS and Google Android mobile platforms by combining the convenience of a local coding environment with cloud-based compilation, data storage, and publishing.

“Even though we are web developers without much experience building mobile applications, when we first leveraged Telerik Icenium, we were surprised at just how fast we were able to be up and running,” said Pavel Kolev from the ChicksBook team. “The fact that we could easily access simulators for all of the major devices is beyond great. Icenium made our lives easier and we were able to create our project quickly and with minimal overhead. The ability to build once and deploy to many platforms was significant in creating this award-winning app.”

Because of their success at the NASA International Space Apps Challenge, the ChicksBook team, made up of Pavel Kolev, Ivan Zhekov, Stoyan Ivanov, Kiril Nikolov and Atanas Keranov, will attend the launching of the MAVEN space station 2013 in November. In addition, Telerik is providing each team member with a one year free subscription to Icenium, as a thank you for leveraging its capabilities for such an auspicious event.

“There is no doubt that the world is going mobile and that developers need help quickly reaching millions of mobile users running iOS and Android. By leveraging Telerik Icenium, developers can take advantage of their current skill sets to build once, versus the need to rebuild the same app over and over,” said Todd Anglin, EVP of Cross-Platform Tools & Services at Telerik. “ChicksBook’s People’s Choice award proves that this approach is not only fast, it’s a hit with users. Congratulations to the ChicksBook team and to all of those who participated in the event.”
