Infonetics: As Businesses Seek More Reliable, Less Costly Communication Services, SIP Trunking Gains Favor

CAMPBELL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Market research firm Infonetics Research released excerpts from its latest telephony infrastructure study, SIP Trunking and SBC Strategies: North American Enterprise Survey. The report details enterprises’ plans for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking and enterprise session border controllers (eSBCs), including expenditures, trunking providers and deployment models.

ANALYST NOTE

“We surveyed close to 300 businesses about their SIP trunking and enterprise SBC plans and one trend is clear: SIP trunking adoption is growing as businesses seek to improve the reliability and lower the cost of communication services,” notes Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC, and IMS at Infonetics Research and author of the study.

Myers adds, “That said, though more and more companies are implementing SIP trunking, it is far from being the ubiquitous standard of T1 lines or ISDN circuits. T1 lines are still the most commonly used trunking service today, and while their use is declining, our survey shows that North American businesses are using a combination of services; there isn’t going to be a 100% cutover from T1 to SIP. Companies are using SIP trunking for only a portion of their call capacity.”

SIP TRUNKING AND ENTERPRISE SBC SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

• The percentage of respondent companies saying they use SIP trunking grows from 38% now to 58% in 2015, while the percentage using T1 lines declines from 71% now to 55% in 2015
• Among enterprises not deploying SIP trunking by 2015, most cited satisfaction with existing voice services as the chief reason, followed by existing service contract not up for renewal
• For the majority of businesses using SIP trunking, the connection with the PBX is made natively (keeps costs down); while for only 31%, the connection is made via premises-based enterprise SBCs
• More than 20 providers were named when respondent companies were asked which vendor they have installed or are evaluating for future purchases, showing that the market for SIP trunking is wide open, with no single provider dominating the landscape today
