TAINAN, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A Mouse Wedding organized by Department of Architecture at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, drew large crowds around the campus and the neighborhoods earlier this month, keeping alive a beautiful tradition of the department.
In the evening of Oct. 8 nearly 70 students donned mouse costumes with mouse makeup, marching through the streets near the campus escorting 3 freshman brides back to school.
The procession of mouse wedding, led by 3 sedans made of rattan and bamboo, set off from the architecture department to fetch the freshman brides in Sheng-Li Dormitory.
All the way through the Banyan Tree Garden, Ta-Hsueh Road, and then Sheng-Li Road, students beat gongs and drums, and used amplifiers to draw attention from passersby.
To bring the Chinese folktale into life, all students in parade put on their hand-made mouse noses, a female sophomore disguised herself as groom in ribbon-attached suit, and a male student dressed up like a Chinese matchmaker in red gown.
After the procession arrived at Sheng-Li Dormitory, the three freshman brides -- Shin- Yi Hong, Yu-Tang Chen, and Shuang-Lin Tsai -- were then covered with red veil, and escorted onto the sedans by the matchmaker.
“The welcome activity is such a great fun,” said Hong, one of the brides, who exclaimed that this is an unforgettable experience.
The idea of the mouse wedding originates from a Chinese folklore, according to Guan-Hao Liu who organized this year’s event. He explained that this activity has been the tradition for the department for decades and it has always been a great story to tell among the students.
