LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On Saturday, July 14, 2012 the Concern Foundation for Cancer Research, an independent non-profit organization dedicated to raising and granting funds to support cancer research for over 43 years, will hold its 38th Annual Block Party at Paramount Studios. The theme, OH WHAT A NIGHT! celebrates the 60th anniversary of the birth of Rock and Roll and the legacy of DJ Alan Freed. Fittingly, the honoree for the event is Lance Freed, President of Rondor Music Publishing (a division of Universal Music Publishing Group), son of Alan Freed.
Alan Freed is widely credited with coining the term “rock and roll” to describe the up-tempo black R&B records he played in 1951 on Cleveland’s WJW. Freed called himself “the Moondog” and his show as the “Moondog Rock ‘n’ Roll Party.” The Freed-sponsored 1952 Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland is cited by Rock historians as the nation’s first rock and roll concert.
Lance’s company, Rondor Music, currently represents many active songwriters and artists including Rod Temperton, Mark Knopfler, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt and D.O.C. among others. Lance’s honorary committee for the Concern event includes Herb Alpert, Clive Davis, Jerry Moss, Brian Wilson, Paul Williams, Steven Van Zandt and a number of well-known colleagues from the music industry.
The Concern Block Party will feature over 50 restaurants and caterers providing “a taste” of their signature dishes. Some participants for the Block Party include: The Grill on the Alley, Lawry’s the Prime Rib, The Chaya Group, Fogo de Chao, Factor’s Famous Deli/Delicacies Fine Catering, Pink’s Famous Hot Dogs, Il Cielo, Tavern, La Provence Patisserie, Via Alloro/Tanino Ristorante, Samba Brazilian Steakhouse, Someone’s In the Kitchen, Savore Cuisine and Events, Dandy Don’s Ice Cream, Larchmont Grill, Bar Hayama, Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Grill Jazz, & Maria’s Italian Kitchen; ten fully stocked hosted bars, COKE Products, Ventura Limoncello Co., Reed’s Ginger Brew Products, Stockholm Krystal Vodka and plenty of coffee drinks from Pasquini Espresso Company and Weaver’s Coffee & Teas.
Since its inception in 1968, CONCERN Foundation has raised and granted over $45 MILLION DOLLARS to support cancer research worldwide. For more information about the event, please visit www.concernfoundation.org/lancefreed or call 310-360-6100. The event opens at 6pm lasting until 11pm.
