ANKARA, Turkey & LUXEMBOURG--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SES (Paris:SESG) (LuxX:SESG) announced today that it has signed a multi-year contract with Turkish public broadcaster, Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu (TRT) for the free-to-air broadcasting of its international digital channel TRT Turk on ASTRA’s 19.2 degrees East orbital position starting on the 21st of May.
TRT will use former analogue capacity on ASTRA that became available when broadcasters in Germany switched off the analogue satellite signals on 30 April. With a line-up of more than 800 TV channels and access to nearly 100 million homes across Europe, ASTRA’s 19.2 orbital position provides unrivalled opportunities for broadcasters and TV viewers.
Norbert Hölzle, Senior Vice President Commercial Europe of SES, said: “We welcome TRT Turk on board Europe’s largest broadcasting platform and look forward to adding another exciting channel to our international line-up on 19.2 degrees East. Unlike any other infrastructure, satellite is able to broadcast a large variety of linear content in high quality to an unlimited audience across large geographical regions. Our global fleet of 50 satellites benefits broadcasters that want to expand their programme offer internationally and reach new audiences beyond their home markets.”
Ibrahim Sahin, General Manager of TRT, said: “We rely on SES’ expertise and fleet to reach out to important audiences and markets in Europe. By choosing ASTRA’s prime orbital position 19.2 degrees East, we will get immediate access to millions of homes, providing a large audience interested in the Turkish culture with access to premium entertainment and information made in Turkey. We trust that the cooperation with ASTRA will provide us with a strong foothold in the European market from day one onwards.”
