Harvard Business Review Announces 53rd Annual McKinsey Award Winners

Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer’s “Creating Shared Value” Recognized as Top Article of 2011

BOSTON--()--Harvard Business Review is pleased to announce that Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer are the McKinsey Award winners for their 2011 article “Creating Shared Value.” Porter is the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School and a four-time winner of the McKinsey Award. Kramer is co-founder and managing director of FSG and also a previous McKinsey Award winner.

The annual McKinsey Awards, judged by an independent panel of business and academic leaders, commend outstanding articles published each year in Harvard Business Review. The awards were established in 1959 to recognize practical and groundbreaking management thinking by determining the two best articles each year. This year’s announcement appears in the April issue of the magazine, hitting newsstands on March 27th.

In “Creating Shared Value,” Porter and Kramer argue for the need to reinvent capitalism in order to combat the diminished trust in business and the resulting policies set forth by political leaders that are sapping economic growth. Their concept of “shared value” focuses on the connections between societal and economic progress which they believe, when put into practice, will help unleash a wave of global innovation and growth. The article first appeared in the January/February 2011 issue of Harvard Business Review and received acknowledgement from respected outlets like the New York Times, Forbes, Financial Times, BBC, and more.

“Creating Shared Value was a seminal article for Harvard Business Review in 2011,” said Adi Ignatius, Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Business Review. “It was the catalyst for our yearlong effort to highlight content that called on business leaders and politicians alike to rethink capitalism.”

This year’s McKinsey Awards also recognizes Rosabeth Moss Kanter as the second place winner for her article, “How Great Companies Think Differently.” Kanter is the Ernest L. Arbuckle Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. Kanter’s article outlines the need for corporate leaders to think of themselves as builders of social institution in order to truly master today’s business challenges.
