AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SXSWedu -- Edmodo, the free and secure social network for education, today announced it will open its API to third–party and independent web developers to enable the creation of educational applications which can be delivered to teachers and classrooms on the Edmodo platform. Apps created for the platform will be available to Edmodo's network of 6 million users and teachers will be able to connect these apps to Edmodo features like badges, assignments, and quizzes in order to create highly engaging learning experiences for their students.
The initial platform launch features over 35 partners that have developed apps leveraging Edmodo’s API.
To foster more rapid innovation in K12 content development, Edmodo is also launching a Teacher-Developer Exchange to connect educators directly with application developers so that together they can create the apps most needed in today’s classrooms.
“Teachers know what works in the classroom—they’re inventing new ways to connect with students every day,” said Nic Borg, CEO and Co-Founder. “By bridging the expertise of great classroom teachers with developers who can create the tools that educators are seeking and conceiving, we think the possibilities are boundless.”
Edmodo makes it easy for teachers to create a secure social learning network for their classroom, and with the Teacher-Developer Exchange, Edmodo is seeking to enhance the feedback loop with educators.
“Edmodo has established itself as the network for the classroom,” said Reid Hoffman, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of LinkedIn and Partner at Greylock Partners. “The Edmodo API will become the most effective way for developers to create content and tools that will help teachers take K12 education to the next level.”
Both free and premium apps will be widely available throughout the United States in the Edmodo Store at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year. Interested developers should visit edmodo.com/platform for further information about participating in the program.
