Actuate Customer The UK's National Health Service (NHS) Sets Standard for New Clinical Commissioning System

CCG+ Solution, Powered by BIRT Performance Analytics, Identifies Annual Savings of $940,000+; Helping NHS South of Tyne and Wear Tighten Internal Operations While Preparing for Clinical Commissioning Group Requirements

SAN MATEO, Calif.--()--Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ:BIRT), The people behind BIRT® and the leading open source Business Intelligence (BI) vendor, today announced that a regional division of the UK National Health Service (NHS), South of Tyne and Wear, has deployed CCG+, a powerful business application that will support Clinical Commissioning Group information requirements while driving substantial internal performance and efficiency improvements.

Powered by BIRT Performance Analytics and built on the unified ActuateOne business intelligence and reporting platform, the CCG+ solution is already giving the NHS greater control over the financial management of local healthcare services. It delivered an early return on investment of approximately $940,000 while also ensuring that the organization will be ready for the NHS’s transition to its new healthcare commissioning system in April 2013. The transition will transfer responsibility for commissioning NHS services from Primary Care Trusts to Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), largely controlled by GPs.

The customized CCG+ application gives the NHS a means of consolidating emerging and historical data from a diverse range of disparate sources. This consolidation will enable improvements in patient care, increased operational efficiency and reduced excessive spending - because administrators and clinical staff now have an accurate, real-time overview of procurement activities at any given time.

CCG+ is also making it substantially easier for the NHS to monitor over 300 key performance indicators (KPIs) for its centrally devised performance management framework, a complicated and time-consuming venture that had previously required multiple data analysts.

“CCG+, powered by BIRT Performance Analytics, has freed our data analyst staff to provide more strategic support to our GP commissioners. That’s a significant amount of resource now realigned to support Clinical Commissioners in their new roles,” comments Scott Watson, Head of Business Delivery at NHS South of Tyne and Wear. Scott’s team also identified over $600,000 in excess charges which can now be avoided. “[The system] has already financed itself,” he says.

The NHS has implemented BIRT Performance Analytics along with the BIRT content to provide decision-makers with sophisticated high-level summary dashboards and reports - distilling critical information and defining which specific content each user is able to access. Deployment of the Actuate solution has been quick and efficient too. The NHS took CCG+ from concept to implementation in the space of just two months, while the scorecard component of the solution was ready to use on GPs’ desktops within a couple of weeks of development.

“Using BIRT Performance Analytics, the NHS can manage all aspects of organizational performance and deliver outstanding patient care by delivering scheduled as well as on-demand content to physicians, nurses and general staff,” says Utpal Bhatt, Vice President and General Manager within the Performance Management Group at Actuate. “CCG+ showcases how business intelligence can be used for positive operational improvement, allowing CCGs to focus immediately on healthcare with the data they need to effectively do their jobs available at their fingertips.”
