TOKYO & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kokoro: The Heart of Japan public symposium and choral concert will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, (7:00 to 9:30 pm) at Merkin Concert Hall of the Kaufman Center (129 West 67th St.) in New York City on the first anniversary of the March 2011 disaster.
The magnitude-9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake devastated northern Japan and caused one of the worst nuclear accidents in human history. The March 6 symposium and choral concert will be an opportunity to reflect on Japan's response to the disaster, with reference to various aspects of Japan's traditional culture, particularly haiku, that offer deep insights into the emotional experience of the survivors.
- Madoka Mayuzumi, one of Japan's leading contemporary haiku poets, will elucidate what the haiku form reveals about the values that permeate Japan's culture.
- Columbia University scholars, including Paul Anderer, Chris Hill, and Kay Shimizu, will join Mayuzumi in discussing both the unique and universal aspects of Japanese society.
- The lecture and symposium will be followed by a choral concert featuring the world premiere of a song for the people of Fukushima, a collaborative benefit project by Mayuzumi and composer Akira Senju.
Kokoro: The Heart of Japan is being hosted by the Tokyo Foundation in collaboration with the Weatherhead East Asian Institute of Columbia University. Support also comes from the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture at Columbia University, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New York, Inc., the Nippon Club, Japan Choral Harmony, and the Men's Glee Club of New York.
