Hawai’i Civil Union and Marriage Online Application Process Now Available

HONOLULU--()--The Hawai’i State Department of Health (DOH) has launched a new online service for couples to apply online for a civil union or marriage license in Hawai’i. The new online process, which was launched on January 1, 2012 through Hawaii's official Internet portal, eHawaii.gov (http://www.eHawaii.gov), streamlines the licensing and issuance process, making the process nearly paperless except for the marriage certificate itself.

Couples can complete the application online prior to visiting a licensing agent. A unique reference ID number is issued for the couple after a successful payment. The ID can be used to access the application and monitor each step of the application and issuance process online. An electronic certificate can also be accessed with the unique ID upon registration of the marriage or civil union.

“Couples are encouraged to apply online to benefit from a more convenient, accurate and efficient process,” said Dr. Alvin Onaka, DOH state registrar. "The statewide system will better serve the needs of our island state where as many as 30,000 marriages have taken place in a given year."

The DOH and eHawaii.gov developed the new online application system with the assistance of community groups, the state's Civil Union Task Force, marriage agents and performers, legislators, the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, and the Attorney General’s Office.
