BOULDER, Colo. & SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Tendril CEO Adrian Tuck today is set to announce that the company’s cloud platform now provides native support for “Green Button” data—consumers’ energy usage data provided in a simple, common, electronic format. Utilities and energy service providers can use the Tendril Connect™ platform to generate Green Button data easily and securely for their consumers. Application developers looking to create new tools for consumers to manage home energy use can now use Tendril Connect to develop applications and make them available to millions of consumers, beginning with the 6 million energy consumers in California who already have access to Green Button data.
The announcement will be made at Transforming the Energy Landscape with the Green Button, an event hosted by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, with a keynote from United States Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra. In addition to Chopra and Tuck, the event included executives from California’s three largest utilities—San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E)—as well as more than 100 executives from leading smart energy companies. PG&E and SDG&E are already providing Green Button data to approximately 6 million consumers in California and SCE plans to provide the data to its 4 million customers later this year.
Tuck will also unveil GreenButtonConnect.com, a free online application gallery where, with a single sign-on, consumers can securely upload their Green Button data for free to find user-friendly apps that can translate that data into actionable information.
“Our platform was designed from the beginning to connect utilities and energy service providers, consumers and app developers to achieve smarter energy usage,” said Tuck. “The advent of the Green Button data means that now, our platform can be leveraged by each of these groups and ultimately, help foster the creation of an energy app marketplace that will drive continued innovation, job growth and cleaner energy.”
Utilities and energy service providers, whether in California or elsewhere, can now use the Tendril Connect platform to easily provide Green Button files to consumers in a secure, scalable, auditable way to enable data sharing to third parties that are creating innovative applications. Tendril previously demonstrated this capability in December 2011 at Grid-Interop. For utilities and other energy service providers, this means more engaged, satisfied and “energy aware” customers.
For application developers, the Tendril Connect platform and the Tendril App Developer website, launched earlier this month, make it possible to securely access easy-to-use Tendril APIs to develop apps for the 10 million consumers in California and make the applications available to consumers on GreenButtonConnect.com. Developers can also take advantage of other Tendril Connect features including building modeling, analytics, and smart device management and control to connect to the millions of PG&E, SDG&E and SCE consumers in California as well as for consumers of other utilities that are already using the Tendril Connect platform. Additionally, GreenButtonConnect.com allows for the anonymous aggregation of consumption data in a single location, making comparison data analytics value even higher.
For consumers, GreenButtonConnect.com is a central online location where they can upload their Green Button file for free and with a single login, access a growing number of energy applications. Among the applications available to consumers through the site is a Facebook application developed by Simple Energy that leverages social media and competition to engage people in saving energy.
“Green Button marks the beginning of a new era of consumer control over energy use, and local empowerment to cut waste and save money,” said Chopra. “With the benefits of open data standards, American apps developers and other innovators can apply their creativity to bring the smart grid to life for families—not only in California but in communities all across the nation.”
GreenButtonConnect.com is powered by Tendril’s cloud platform—Tendril Connect. The Tendril platform is already in use by more than 35 utilities and energy service providers to connect to their customers, as well as by leading manufacturers like Whirlpool looking to deploy smart devices, and 150 application developers registered in the Tendril Connect App Developer program.
