COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Volcom has announced that Grant Taylor, a longtime member of the company’s skate team, has been named Thrasher Magazine’s Skater of the Year for 2011, one of the sport’s most sought after awards.
Thrasher magazine has been awarding the Skater of the Year title for two decades since Tony Hawk was the first skater to win the award in 1990. A link to Taylor’s video can be seen here: http://youtu.be/LKd9mHnUVUQ?hd=1
Taylor, 20, was determined to shred, even at a young age. He began his career at the ripe age of 6, and his father, former pro skater Thomas Taylor, didn’t waste any time bringing him around to events. While most kids his age were playing on playgrounds and watching Sesame Street, Taylor was flying up mini-ramps and attracting crowds in the skating world.
Volcom saw that Taylor had incredible talent early in his career, and hooked him up with free gear and supported him as a young athlete. Taylor continued to evolve, and it soon became apparent he was addicted to the sport, and was making a real career out of it. He hit the amateur competitive scene in the early 2000’s, and by 2004 he won second place at the Phoenix Am. From there he continued to perfect his skating skills, as well as appear in a number of skate videos, including Debacle, Mindfield, and Killing Time. Watch for Taylor in the SB Chronicles, Volume One which should be out by December 2011.
“Grant Taylor is a true inspiration to everyone in the skateboarding industry, and this award is testament to all his hard work over the span of his career thus far,” said Remy Stratton, Volcom VP of Skateboarding. “These last few years, Grant has really put it in hyper drive, and has become a truly calculated adrenaline junky in constant attack mode. We are pleased as punch for his success!”
