Brazilian, Russian, Indian and Chinese Electrophysiology Mapping and Ablation Markets to More Than Double by 2016

BRIC Electrophysiology and Ablation Market to Grow at 16 Percent a Year and Total $345 Million by 2016, According to Millennium Research Group

TORONTO--()--According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, the Brazilian, Russian, Indian and Chinese (BRIC) electrophysiology (EP) mapping and ablation device markets are all expected to grow strongly in the next five years, driven largely by healthcare expansion, which will lead to both increased diagnoses of cardiac arrhythmias and an increased ability to treat these arrhythmias.

Increasingly sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets and an aging population are all increasing the risk of developing arrhythmias in the BRIC countries, particularly atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation treatment will see both high procedural growth and the use of higher-end technologies, particularly catheter-based treatments, and will thus show the largest overall revenue growth.

Increased efficacy of atrial fibrillation catheter-based treatments and BRIC physician training will lead to increased adoption of this technique as patients opt for catheter-based treatments over symptom management through medical therapy, previously the only alternative. These advanced diagnostic and ablation catheters are priced at a premium and will help drive revenues.

“An important market-limiting factor in the BRIC markets is the reuse of EP mapping and ablation devices,” said MRG Analyst Ian Swanson. “Pressures to contain costs have led to frequent device reuse. The cost per procedure drops substantially if you are able to reuse an expensive device that is designed for single use in the United States and Europe. The exception is China. The Chinese government has prohibited device reuse of EP mapping and ablation products hoping to make the Chinese market more attractive to device manufacturers.”

China accounts for the largest proportion of BRIC EP mapping and ablation market because of its large patient base, limited device reuse and strong government initiatives to drive procedural growth.

Millennium Research Group’s BRIC Markets for Electrophysiology Mapping and Ablation Devices 2012 report includes procedure, unit, average selling price and revenue information, along with market drivers and limiters and competitive landscape for diagnostic catheters, ablation catheters and long introducer sheaths in Brazil, Russia, India and China.
