DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/8b7b13/thailand_infrastru) has announced the addition of the "Thailand Infrastructure Report Q4 2011" report to their offering.
BMI's belief that Thailand was vulnerable to a construction slowdown in 2011 appears to be playing out. Latest data show real growth in Thailand's construction sector slowed to 3.7% year-on-year (year-on-year) in Q1 2011, compared to 9.5% in Q1 2010. Therefore, BMI is maintaining its 2011 real growth forecast for the construction sector at 2.9%. This decline does not indicate a lack of construction projects, but rather the risk of delays to project execution due to the Thai government's lack of funds and the potential for further political unrest. While the landslide victory by the Puea Thai Party (PTP) in the latest general election suggests that political stability can be achieved, BMI is doubtful that foreign investors will respond positively to the election's outcome as the PTP's victory is unlikely to bring an end to the deep political divide in Thailand. The change of government could also lead to a review of infrastructure projects approved by its predecessor, leading to project delays and cancellations.
Key drivers from the past quarter include:
- In July 2011, Airports of Thailand (AoT)'s board of directors agreed with the recommendations made by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a UN agency, for the construction of a domestic terminal at the congested Suvarnabhumi Airport. The THB9.1bn (US$298mn) terminal is expected to handle 20mn passengers a year and is regarded as a medium-term solution for addressing the congestion at Thailand's gateway airport.
- In May 2011, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) announced plans to spend THB66bn (US$2.17bn) on the construction of three 800MW gas-fired power plants, to be completed by 2015.
