MILAN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--More than half the search queries for flights leaving Italy in the summer months performed on Voli Low Cost were targeted to Europe, while the other half were almost equally divided between Italy and the rest of the world, with a slight preference for foreign Countries.
The most searched destination was London, which thanks to the depreciation of the pound has become more affordable than in the past. Therefore, despite the unrest which shook the British summer, the English capital maintains its appeal and remains the favourite destination for many Italian tourists.
Another big hit of the summer 2011, and also the only non-European destination in the top ten, is New York, followed by Paris (fifth), Barcelona (seventh) and Amsterdam (ninth), while Milan and Rome only come fifteenth and sixteenth.
The preference for foreign countries is also clear when looking at seaside locations. Indeed, Mykonos (Greece) and Ibiza (Spain), two destinations traditionally loved by young people, rank third and forth in the list.
As far as Italy is concerned, the most searched beach locations are Sicily and Sardinia. The two islands compete for the top position as most popular seaside destination in Italy, with Olbia (Sardinia), Catania (Sicily), Palermo (Sicily) and Cagliari (Sardinia) being the leading airports searched by the website users.
Finally, from the research we infer that Italians favoured short-distance journeys, at least for this summer and despite their preference for destinations abroad. The only other long-distance destination among the top twenty, a part from New York, is indeed Bangkok.
