NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jazz composer and pianist Matt Savage will be joined by bassist Joris Teepe and drummer Peter Retzlaff for two shows at The Iridium Jazz Club on Wednesday, August 31st at 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM. This marks their first appearance in Manhattan since Savage’s album release party at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in February. The album, Welcome Home, peaked at #18 on JazzWeek’s radio airplay chart and reached #3 on the CMJ Jazz chart. All About Jazz praised the CD saying, “this is Savage’s album all the way, as he not only plays with a maturity well beyond his years but wrote and arranged every number.”
Welcome Home celebrates Matt Savage’s travels and the many places he calls “home,” from his organic family farm in the country to the rhythms of a metropolitan city. The album flows from the pastoral tempos of songs like “Picturesque” and “Seasons Change” to the energy of the big city with college life in Boston (where Matt is currently a junior at Berklee College of Music) and concerts in New York City. One of the highlights is the Manhattan-inspired single, “Big Apple Blues” from the five-part song, “Big Apple Suite.” It’s no wonder Matt considers Manhattan a “second home,” considering his landmark musical appearances in that city. At the age of 11 he debuted at the famed Blue Note, and the following year he appeared at Birdland with the legendary Clark Terry on trumpet and Jimmy Heath on sax. Matt first performed at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in 2007 with the Matt Savage Trio. In 2008, he debuted “Big Apple Suite” at New York’s Cachaça Jazz Club, earning praise from the Wall Street Journal as “a phenomenally talented pianist and composer who demands to be taken seriously on purely musical terms.”
Welcome Home is Matt’s second album to be produced by Grammy-nominated Jonathan Wyner and engineered by nine time Grammy-winner Tom Bates, the same stellar team at the helm of the Matt Savage Trio’s 2008 album, Hot Ticket: Live in Boston. Additional musicians featured on Welcome Home include sax great, Bobby Watson, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, bassist John Funkhouser and drummer Yoron Israel.
Prior to appearing at The Iridium, Matt will make his first appearance at the Marblehead Jazz Festival in Massachusetts on July 23. From July 26th to August 1st, the Matt Savage Trio will perform at the Costa Rica International Jazz Festival, with daily shows and a headline gig on July 28th at 8 PM at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in San Jose.
The Iridium Jazz Club is located at 1650 Broadway (between 50th and 51st). Tickets are $20 each and the second set offers a half-price admission for students. To purchase tickets call (212) 582-2121 or visit http://theiridium.com/reservations/.
