Eniram and ABB to Increase Vessel Efficiency for Azipod® Systems

Combined solution creates opportunity for further fuel and emissions efficiencies

HELSINKI--()--Eniram Ltd, provider of advanced decision support systems for the shipping industry, has today announced an agreement with ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, to integrate Eniram’s pod optimization technology into the ABB’s Azipod® propulsion system for new build vessels as well as retrofit projects.

The dynamic pod optimization, based on Eniram’s Vessel Management System (VMS) has been proven to optimize the relation of the Azipod® angles and will enable ship operators sailing Azipod propelled vessels to make further increases on fuel savings already realized using traditional Azipod® systems. Results from a collaborative study carried out last year by Eniram and ABB exceeded the originally anticipated fuel savings proving that the combined technology has the potential to truly increase vessel efficiency.

“With rising fuel costs and energy efficiency measures high on the agenda, shipping operators are under increasing pressure to maximize performance in all fields of vessel operations” said Philip Padfield, CEO, Eniram. “As a leader in the automation technology marketplace, Eniram is proud of ABB's vote of confidence in our high accuracy analytics systems and we are excited about the opportunity to assist in delivering improved fuel efficiency for its Azipod customers.”

“Following the completion of a successful joint study, we quickly leveraged Eniram’s technology in the continuous work of developing our propulsion technology” said Heikki Soljama, head of ABB’s Marine and Cranes Business Unit. “By incorporating Eniram’s Vessel Management System (VMS) into our Azipod units, we further improve on fuel efficiency and provide the shipping community with the most advanced propulsion solution in the marketplace today”.

ABB and Eniram will be showcasing the joint solution at Cruise Shipping Miami taking place on 14th-17th March 2011.
