PHILADELPHIA & PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Thorp Reed & Armstrong, LLP (Thorp Reed) has appointed partner John P. Donohue to lead the firm’s International Law Practice Group. With over 35 years experience practicing International Trade Law and more than 20 years experience as an adjunct professor of International Trade Law at the Seton Hall University School of Law, Mr. Donohue offers a unique perspective that combines his practice and classroom experience, allowing him to continuously bring new knowledge to both arenas.
Mr. Donohue concentrates his practice on Customs and International Trade Law, representing both U.S. importers and foreign corporations before all agencies of the federal government with the authority to control the international movement of goods, including U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, the U.S. International Trade Commission, and the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to bring together all of the disciplines and the practicalities of both the practice and teaching of International Trade Law in leading the group,” said Mr. Donohue. “There is great opportunity to expand this practice area given the international trade issues increasingly faced by mid-sized American companies that are very quickly recognizing that significant growth will come from dealing internationally. As businesses look outside the United States for both sales opportunities and new product sourcing, the Thorp Reed International Law practice is well suited to guide them.”
“John’s expansive background in matters of international trade law makes him the natural choice to lead our International Law Practice Group, a role that puts him in the best position to share his unique experiences and understanding of the law,” said Jeffrey J. Conn, Managing Partner of Thorp Reed. “We look forward to his guidance and continued contributions to the firm as he steps into this new role.”
“John has unmatched hands-on experience representing clients before federal agencies, as well as in federal district courts, when it comes to matters of international trade,” noted Joe Donley, Partner-In-Charge of Thorp Reed’s Philadelphia office. “He is extremely well-suited to this position and we have full confidence in his ability to lead the team of attorneys specializing in International Law as they continue to meet the needs of our clients.”
Mr. Donohue’s practice includes representation of U.S. and foreign corporations in proceedings under the U.S. international trade laws. He has substantial experience representing importers charged with both civil and criminal violations of the trade laws, and has litigated before the federal district courts in New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania, as well as the U.S. Court of International Trade.
Mr. Donohue earned his J.D. from Catholic University of America, and received his B.A. from Providence College. He has been named twice as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer, and is a member of the Congress of Fellows of the Center for International Legal Studies in Salzburg, Austria. Prior to beginning the active practice of law, Mr. Donohue was a Special Agent of the FBI.
