Westinghouse Awarded Contract to Evaluate Deployment of AP1000® Reactor in Slovenia

Feasibility Study to Evaluate Deployment of One Reactor at the Proposed Krško-II Nuclear Power Plant

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Westinghouse Electric Company announced today the signing of a contract with Slovenia’s state-owned power company GEN energija to conduct a Technical Feasibility Study (TFS) assessing the deployment of an AP1000® reactor in support of its nuclear new-build strategy. Westinghouse has teamed with Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company to conduct the TFS.

This comprehensive study will evaluate the deployment of one AP1000 nuclear reactor at the proposed Krško-II Nuclear Power Plant. The Krško-II project is planned for a site adjacent to the current Krško Nuclear Power Plant, which is based on Westinghouse technology. The TFS represents a significant step forward in the country's ambitious strategy to reduce its reliance on foreign energy sources to gain energy independence.

“Since delivering the first Krško unit, which has operated very successfully since it started operating in 1983, Westinghouse has built a decades-long partnership with GEN energija through operational and fueling support. We are pleased to extend the relationship to closely study the feasibility of the Krško-II project,” said Dan Lipman, President of Westinghouse Energy Systems. “This potential AP1000 project will not only provide clean, reliable baseload power to Slovenians, it will also deliver real economic benefits and high-quality jobs for years to come while fostering Slovenia’s energy independence.”

The AP1000 reactor is the only operating Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems, modular construction design and the smallest footprint per MWe on the market. There are six AP1000 reactors currently setting operational performance and availability records worldwide with twelve additional reactors under construction and five more under contract. There will be 18 units based on AP1000 technology in operation globally by the end of the decade. The AP1000 technology has also been selected for nuclear energy programs in Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria, and is also under consideration at multiple other sites in Europe, the United Kingdom, India and North America.

Westinghouse Electric Company is shaping the future of carbon-free energy by providing safe, innovative nuclear and other clean power technologies and services globally. Westinghouse supplied the world’s first commercial pressurized water reactor in 1957 and the company’s technology is the basis for nearly one-half of the world's operating nuclear plants. Over 135 years of innovation makes Westinghouse the preferred partner for advanced technologies covering the complete nuclear energy life cycle.
