BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Groups released their second Annual Outcomes Report, following last year’s call for transparency in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment data. The 2025 Annual Outcomes Report reinforces the feasibility and success of value-based arrangements and compassionate, collaborative, and community-centered care for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
This report is the first asset designed with Groups’ refreshed visual identity, which reflects the innovation and progress at the heart of our mission. This new look will roll out across all materials throughout 2025, bringing even greater alignment and clarity to how we tell our story.
“In this year’s Annual Outcomes Report, we have increased the transparency into our care model as well as the evolution of our internal goal-setting and tracking. We welcome other providers to not only join us in this level of transparency, but also incorporate what we’ve learned after a decade of practice into their own models. Together, we can make sure that sustainable recovery is within reach for everyone,” said Dr. Jacob “Gus” Crothers, the Chief Medical and Outcomes Officer at Groups.
Our second Annual Outcomes Report highlights how our unique care model creates lasting change in alignment with the six core outcomes that define success in addiction treatment:
- Access & Growth: Only one in five individuals who need OUD treatment receive it. We play an outsized role in closing this treatment gap in our communities. This past year, 20,770 individuals began their intake journeys, with 85% having “severe” OUD (based on DSM-V criteria) and 17% never receiving prior treatment.
- Engagement: Behavioral science shows that when consistent routines are bolstered by peer accountability and connection, they are more likely to stick. In 2024, 92.4% of Groups members remained in treatment every month.
- Remission: This past year, nearly 100% of members who remained in treatment for at least 180 days achieved remission* versus 32% of those in treatment for less than 180 days. While remission is the primary goal of treatment for most members, members set and track their own recovery goals. Those who test positive for illicit substances are not kicked out of treatment.
- Retention: Research has established six months of treatment as the “starting line” for meaningful positive outcomes. Groups members are more than 2x as likely to remain in treatment for at least six months compared to the national average.
- Mortality Reduction: One life lost to overdose is too many. The number of deaths per 1,000 member-years of treatment is ~2.75x less than the national average.
- Cost of Care: On a risk-adjusted basis, the cost of care for Groups members are significantly less expensive than those receiving treatment from similar providers. The costs are also less expensive than those of individuals receiving no treatment.
“More than a decade into our service, we maintain the same commitment to our mission: delivering exceptional, community-centered addiction care in the areas hardest hit by the opioid overdose epidemic. Our outcomes draw a clear line between our approach to care and industry-leading numbers,” said Groups CEO Colleen Nicewicz.
“We encourage everyone who reads our report to remember that every number represents a whole person — a life changed, a future reclaimed, a family reunited, and a community restored. We are deeply proud of all that our members have accomplished — and how our dedicated team helped them get to where they want to be. The OUD treatment gap and overdose epidemic continue to harm our communities, so our work is not over. We will continue to publish our outcomes and lead the industry toward better treatment for all.”
