Citizens Against Government Waste Names CFPB Director Rohit Chopra January 2025 Porker of the Month

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) named Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra its January 2025 Porker of the Month for abusing his power and failing to protect consumers.

In December 2024, the CFPB filed three frivolous lawsuits that reeked of partisan politics. The lawsuits immediately drew criticism and stoked concerns that the agency was simply playing politics. The CFPB sued payment platform Zelle, along with JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, claiming that they failed to protect consumers from fraud. Zelle responded by saying the lawsuit is “factually flawed” and driven by political factors. After failing to conduct a fair investigation, Director Chopra sued Walmart over the opening of drivers’ bank accounts. Walmart rejected the allegations and accused the CFPB of not honoring due process of law. In the third lawsuit, Director Chopra claimed that Rocket Homes directed loans to Rocket Mortgage. But evidence shows consumers were not stopped from choosing any lender they wanted.

CAGW President Tom Schatz said, “With his latest antics, CFPB Director Chopra is pushing partisan politics instead of protecting consumer finances. The CFPB has long been criticized due to its lack of congressional oversight. Since President Trump took office, the Department of Government Efficiency has begun to float the idea of dissolving the CFPB, which is one of many commonsense proposals to make the government more efficient. Director Chopra’s abuse of power and waste of taxpayer dollars by filing frivolous lawsuits make him an easy choice for January Porker of the Month.”

Citizens Against Government Waste is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government. For more than two decades, Porker of the Month is a dubious honor given to lawmakers and government officials who have shown a blatant disregard for the taxpayers.
