Bell Law Firm and Ilardi Law File Medical Negligence Lawsuit Against Piedmont Atlanta Hospital

SUWANEE, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bell Law Firm and Ilardi Law confirm the filing of a medical malpractice lawsuit against Piedmont Healthcare, Inc., Aya Healthcare Services, Inc., and registered nurse Lanesia Kierra Martin, following a negligent incident leading to severe injuries sustained by Donald H. Huizer. The civil lawsuit was filed by Mr. Huizer and his wife, Julie Huizer.

The suit, filed in the State Court of Cobb County, contends that Mr. Huizer, who underwent heart surgery on August 9, 2023, received improper post-operative care involving the vasopressor medication Norepinephrine. This medication, known for its high-risk potential when mismanaged, was intended to be discontinued but was mistakenly administered excessively by Nurse Martin, resulting in a life-altering hemorrhagic stroke.

The complaint asserts that the Defendants exhibited negligence in multiple facets, including:

  • Failing to properly manage the administration of the high-alert medication
  • Unclamping an IV line that should have been disconnected, leading to an unintended overdose
  • Breaching the standard of care expected of healthcare providers

“As a direct result of Piedmont’s negligence, Don has sustained permanent brain damage that has altered every aspect of his life,” said Lloyd Bell of Bell Law Firm, lead counsel for the Huizers. “Although Don has tremendous love and support from Julie, his wife of 35 years, and their three daughters, every day is a struggle as Don struggles to speak, regulate his emotions, and function with a severe brain injury.”

The Huizers are seeking compensatory and punitive damages for the wanton disregard for patient safety demonstrated in this case. They are also seeking reimbursement for litigation expenses and attorney fees. Additionally, Mrs. Huizer seeks damages for the loss of consortium and companionship from her husband, as their family dynamics have been dramatically altered.

“We are committed to seeking justice for the Huizer family, whose lives have been irrevocably affected by what we believe to be gross negligence in the care provided at Piedmont Healthcare,” continued Bell.

The case underscores the critical responsibilities held by healthcare providers and the severe consequences resulting from lapses in patient care standards. View the full complaint here.

The Huizers request that you respect their privacy during this difficult time and appreciate the support from their community as they navigate this legal process.
