SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Napoli Shkolnik, along with Davczyk & Varline, has filed a Class action suit against the 3M Company for PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contamination originating from the company's Greystone Facility and Quarry. The legal action aims to address the severe public health and environmental risks posed by PFAS, which are linked to cancer, and other serious health conditions.
The lawsuit alleges that 3M, a leading manufacturer of PFAS-containing products and the owner of Greystone Quarry in Wausau, Wisconsin, disposed of roofing granules at the facility and introduced harmful levels of PFAS into neighboring wells. The contaminated water has forced residents to turn to costly alternatives, while raising urgent concerns about long-term health effects. Plaintiffs contend that 3M’s actions have directly caused the contamination of their drinking water, compromising their health, safety, and quality of life. Plaintiffs seek compensation for damages, including costs related to obtaining clean water, property damage, and potential health impacts.
PFAS, commonly known as 'forever chemicals' due to their persistence in the environment, have been linked to serious health risks, including certain cancers, immune system disorders, and reproductive health issues. Testing conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) revealed alarming concentrations of PFAS in water samples taken from the area around the Greystone facility. According to DNR data, levels of PFOA and PFOS—the two most widely studied PFAS compounds—were found at 210 parts per trillion (ppt) and 310 ppt, respectively, far exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) recent advisories for safe drinking water.
Paul J. Napoli, one of the attorneys representing the Village of Maine residents, emphasized the critical need for accountability: “The people of Maine have the right to clean, safe drinking water. For far too long, companies like 3M have prioritized profits over public safety, and this lawsuit seeks to ensure they are held responsible for the harm they’ve caused. We are committed to securing justice and compensation for affected families.”
Hunter Shkolnik, also representing the plaintiffs, highlighted the broader implications of the case: “PFAS contamination is a national crisis, and the Village of Maine is yet another example of how corporate negligence has put communities at risk. This legal action not only seeks to remedy the harm done here but also sends a strong message to polluters everywhere that this kind of conduct will not go unchallenged.”
The lawsuit comes amidst growing scrutiny of PFAS contamination across the country, with communities nationwide grappling with its widespread impact. This case adds to mounting legal pressure on manufacturers to address the damages caused by decades of unchecked pollution.
The Village of Maine residents hope this legal action will bring justice and prompt systemic changes to prevent future contamination.
