AUSTIN, Texas--()--With peak season holiday shopping underway, shipping could become a major stressor for consumers this year. A new survey by Stamps.com, a leading provider of postal and shipping solutions from Auctane, reveals 40% of US consumers are unaware of crucial holiday shipping deadlines. This oversight can lead to last-minute scrambles, higher shipping costs and packages arriving late, possibly after the holidays.

Generational Divide: Baby Boomers vs. Millennials

The survey found a generational difference in holiday shipping deadline awareness, with 53% of Baby Boomers unaware of these cut-off dates, compared to just 32% of Millennials. Millennials are also more likely to prioritize guaranteed delivery, with 68% citing it as a key factor when choosing a shipping option this holiday season. These findings highlight the importance younger generations place on receiving their deliveries on time.

Shipping Delays Are Common

With millions of packages set to hit the system, it is not uncommon for shipping delays to occur in the holiday season. Of those surveyed, 66% have experienced holiday shipping delays, with Gen Z reporting the highest rate of delays at 73%, compared to 49% of Baby Boomers. Again, this highlights that younger generations are less tolerant of delays and prioritize fast and efficient shipping.

“As the holiday season approaches, it’s crucial for consumers to be prepared and aware of shipping deadlines to ensure their gifts arrive on time,” said Nick Spitzman, General Manager of Stamps.com. ”Our survey highlights the significant portion of consumers who are unaware of these deadlines, particularly older generations. It’s essential for retailers and shipping carriers to provide clear and timely information about shipping deadlines to help consumers avoid last-minute stress and disappointment. By planning ahead and being mindful of shipping timelines, consumers can enjoy a stress-free holiday season,” finished Spitzman.

Gift-Giving Preferences Impact Shipping Choices

The survey also revealed how generational preferences influence shipping choices. While Gen Z prioritizes speed and convenience, with nearly 40% prioritizing delivery dates, older generations often consider factors like cost and fragility. For instance, only 25% of Boomers prioritize delivery dates, suggesting a greater emphasis on affordability and protection from damage.

Willingness to Pay Extra for On Time Delivery

Faced with the prospect of a late-arriving gift, a huge 83% of surveyed consumers are willing to pay extra for faster shipping. This trend is especially strong among Gen Z, with 56% willing to pay up, compared to just 27% of Baby Boomers.

The Takeaway: Plan Ahead and Be Prepared

Stamps.com advises consumers to begin holiday shopping early and familiarize themselves with shipping deadlines across carriers. With Thanksgiving falling later this year, the holiday season is shorter, making planning ahead even more essential. Choosing guaranteed delivery options may also be beneficial to avoid last-minute fees and delays.
