NORTON, Ohio & AKRON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After nearly four decades serving the community of Norton and surrounding areas, Dayton Nurseries announced this week that owner Tom Dayton will retire, exit the business, and that the business, nursery and 20-plus acres will be put up for sale. The nursery will close its doors by the end of the year.
The sale represents a unique opportunity for a potential buyer, and for the community, with multiple options available that include purchasing and/or leasing the land located in Norton Ohio, off I-76, less than a quarter mile from the freeway exit.
Ideally, a buyer would continue the nursery and Tom’s legacy, however, many options for the property are being considered, according to family members.
“Our hope, in any case, is that the property is used for something positive, provides jobs for the community and is embraced by everyone. We hope that whatever the future holds, this property becomes something as loved as Dayton Nurseries,” the family said.
Regarding the sale, family members said they are committed to helping employees with the transition. “There are so many wonderful people who work here, many of whom have been by Tom’s side for years. We’re very grateful for the care and extra support employees have given Tom the past few years. Unfortunately, he is unable to remain active in the business, making a sale necessary,” they said.
“The nursery was Tom’s passion and his life. He cared deeply about his employees and the community, which made this decision very difficult. We’ve worked tirelessly to provide a different solution; however, we know in our hearts that this decision is what’s best for Tom’s future,” the family noted. “We are also grateful to the community which has supported Tom and Dayton Nurseries for nearly four decades. We simply have the best customers in the world who have welcomed us into their homes, yards and gardens for decades, and we thank them for their support through the years. Your patronage has simply been remarkable and a wonderful tribute to what Tom has built here.”
