Los Angeles City Council Endorses Prop 33 Rent Control Measure (Yes on 33)

Council votes to support ballot measure to overturn California’s statewide ban on rent control

LOS ANGELES--()--Housing advocates, rent control supporters, union leaders, and several elected officials thanked the Los Angeles City Council for its endorsement earlier today of Proposition 33, a November statewide ballot initiative that will allow for the expansion of rent control in California.

“We are excited to share that the City of Los Angeles has taken a firm stand to support renters by endorsing Proposition 33,” said Susie Shannon, campaign manager for Yes on 33. “We want to specifically thank Councilmembers Hugo Soto Martinez and Nithya Raman as author and second on the motion to endorse and also want to acknowledge and thank Council President Marqueece Harris Dawson, Pro-Tempore Bob Blumenfield, as well as Councilmembers Kevin de Leon, Eunisses Hernandez, Tim McOsker, and Katy Yaroslavsky. The City Council’s support comes at a crucial time in the home stretch of the campaign and on behalf of renters throughout Los Angeles, we thank the Council for this important endorsement.”

Notable other figures and groups who have endorsed Proposition 33 include the California Democratic Party, both San Francisco & Los Angeles Counties, the Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing (SCANPH), Los Angeles Tenants Union (LATU), Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), labor and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, UNITE HERE Co-President Ada Briceño, Democratic National Committee Member Christine Pelosi, and the California DSA.

Proposition 33, sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and now endorsed by more than 100 elected and formerly elected officials in California as well as more than 100 labor, senior, veteran, healthcare, and tenant groups, is just 23 words: The state may not limit the right of any city, county, or city and county to maintain, enact or expand residential rent control.” Prop 33 also has the support of the California Democratic Party, labor icon Dolores Huerta, and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.
