Building Transparency Announces Development of Next Version of tallyLCA in Collaboration with KieranTimberlake

New Features and Improved Functionality to Drive Enhanced Carbon Footprint Analysis

SEATTLE--()--Building Transparency, a nonprofit organization that provides open access data and tools to foster a better building future, today announces it is developing Tally® 2.0, the next iteration of its tallyLCA tool, in collaboration with KieranTimberlake. The new version of the tool will continue to support the building industry by providing insight into the environmental impact of materials and different building designs.

Tally 2.0 will build on the success of the existing tool and include additional features that better enable environmentally conscious and carbon-smart decision-making across projects. The new version of the tool aligns with Building Transparency’s efforts to provide free, open-access and transparent life cycle assessment (LCA) data.

“Our mission at Building Transparency is centered around providing the tools and resources needed to drive embodied carbon reductions in the building industry,” said Stacy Smedley, Executive Director of Building Transparency. “With Tally 2.0, we are continuing this commitment by giving a major update to a tool that we know is working well but can be further improved to support our users. We’re grateful for KieranTimberlake’s support and partnership in developing this next version of our life cycle assessment tool.”

Partnering for the Ongoing Development of tallyLCA

The development of Tally 2.0 is the next phase of a partnership between Building Transparency and KieranTimberlake to create an ecosystem of tools that enable carbon reductions. In 2021, KieranTimberlake gifted tallyLCA to Building Transparency for its continued management, hosting, and development.

TallyLCA was the first LCA app that allowed designers to calculate the environmental impacts of their buildings directly in Revit®. It’s focused on empowering higher-level design and material type choices that become the critical first step toward reducing their design’s environmental impact. Today, tallyLCA has almost 3,500 users in the AEC industry.

“We are honored to partner with Building Transparency on the development of Tally 2.0,” said Ryan Welch, Principal and Research Director at KieranTimberlake. “By transitioning Tally to a free and open-access tool, we aim to move the AEC industry towards design strategies that minimize environmental impact.”

The Path Ahead for Tally 2.0

Tally 2.0 is expected to be available for public release in 2025. Currently, Building Transparency and KieranTimberlake are in the early development stage, engaging with key industry stakeholders to ensure alignment on the roadmap for the tool’s development. A few of the features currently being planned for are:

- Interactive, in-tool reporting
- Alignment with industry reporting standards
- User interface designs to improve flexibility and quality of LCA modeling
