KDLLP Cowichan Tribes’ Economic Development Corporation Breaks Ground on 200 Unit Housing Project

DUNCAN, British Columbia--()--KDLLP is excited to announce the ground-breaking ceremony for Rivers Edge, their housing project at 222 Cowichan Way, Duncan, BC, today, September 12th, 2024, at 10:00 AM PST.

KDLLP is developing a mixed-use building located on Cowichan Tribes reserve land which will include 200 apartment suites with up to 30% of the units at below-market rent. The ground floor will also offer commercial space and a café.

These units have been thoughtfully designed to cater to families, couples, retirees, and young professionals seeking an affordable yet enriched living solution. The design prioritizes creative spatial planning and optimal views of the picturesque Cowichan River and Prevost Mountain, elevating residents' overall quality of life. Notably, departing from prevailing trends in the Cowichan market, below-market units are interspersed throughout the suite selection, ensuring accessibility for all demographics.

One of the key features of this development is the inclusion of an underground parkade. This design choice allows for creating more green spaces, which will embrace local culture and showcase the land's natural beauty. The project will feature a play area, outdoor kitchen, and community gardens, contributing significantly to residents' physical and mental well-being. These spaces offer avenues for leisure and relaxation, fostering a stronger sense of community and family among residents.

This project will offer high-quality living solutions that enhance residents' lifestyles while fostering a strong sense of community.

“As the largest First Nation in B.C. by population with more than 5500 citizens, the need for housing for our families is acute. However, there are many complex challenges to building on-reserve housing. I commend KDLLP for the unique partnerships and collaboration they have fostered with the Province of B.C., B.C. Housing, and the Infrastructure Bank of Canada to build these 200 new homes,” said Cowichan Tribes Chief Sulsulxumaat Cindy Daniels. “Today marks a milestone for not only this project, but for our community. This major housing development will transform the lives of the residents who will live here, at the edge of the Quw’utsun Sta’lo’ (Cowichan River) which has sustained our people physically and spiritually for millennia,” added Daniels.

“Today represents the combined efforts of KDLLP, Cowichan Tribes, The Province of BC, The Federal Government, and Cowichan Tribes Contractors. Our team of Architects and Engineers have provided an inspired design that reflects the importance of the Cowichan River, the land, and the value Cowichan Tribes Citizens place on family. Rivers Edge will provide much needed housing to Cowichan Tribes and the Cowichan Valley, and it will be a positive legacy for generations,” said Interim CEO of KDLLP, Renée Olson.
